ETD Inc. completed an Environmental Assessment for the Bluestone Community Development Project in Houck, Arizona, sponsored by the Navajo Housing Authority (NHA). Located about 10 miles west of the Arizona-New Mexico state line, the project involves constructing 160 homes on 80 acres of private fee simple land owned by NHA. The community, designed with sustainable practices, will include apartments, group homes, and single-family homes, alongside parks, a central plaza, basketball courts, horse stables, and local markets. The development also prioritizes open spaces for farming to foster a balanced environment.
During the unveiling event, Council Delegate Lorenzo Curley emphasized the importance of sustainable development for his community of Houck. He praised the project’s vision, which serves as a model for future Navajo housing projects and addresses a pressing need for affordable housing for families with a gross income between $15,000 and $35,000. NHA CEO Aneva Yazzie echoed Curley’s sentiments, expressing pride in the project’s innovation.
The Bluestone Development has attracted various partners, including Swaback Partners, LLC, and Kitchell, who will assist in community master planning, construction, and infrastructure implementation. Former Navajo Nation President Dr. Peterson Zah also endorsed the project, citing its potential to foster self-sustaining communities that align with Navajo values of living in harmony with the land.
The development is expected to significantly contribute to housing needs while maintaining environmental integrity, serving as an example for other tribal communities.
