On August 30, 2022, the Biden-Harris administration made a pivotal announcement regarding a $50 million grant aimed at advancing high-speed internet infrastructure on the Navajo Nation. This grant, provided by the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), is a key component of efforts to bridge the digital divide across the Navajo Nation. As a result of this funding, all 63 planned broadband infrastructure projects have now been fully funded, marking a critical milestone for the community.
Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez joined U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo in Phoenix, Arizona, to announce the award. During the event, President Nez emphasized the importance of this investment, stating, “We have a seat at the table with the Biden-Harris Administration. Through our discussions with President Biden, Secretary Raimondo, and NTIA, we were successful in demonstrating the need for increased broadband connectivity to support our students, first responders, businesses, and families.” This grant builds upon the Navajo Nation’s previous successes in expanding broadband infrastructure through funding provided by the CARES Act and the American Rescue Plan Act, allowing the Nation to further strengthen its digital capabilities.
Broadband access is essential for the Navajo Nation’s future, enabling improved educational opportunities, enhanced healthcare services, and more robust economic development. This significant investment will not only provide immediate benefits to current residents but also help build a stronger, more connected Nation for generations to come. As technology becomes increasingly integrated into everyday life, high-speed internet will be crucial for fostering growth and opportunity across the Navajo Nation.
